Generalized tri-quotient maps and Čech-completeness

For a topological space X let K(X) be the set of all compact subsets of X. The purpose of this paper is to characterize Lindelöf Čech-complete spaces X by means of the sets K(X). Similar characterizations also hold for Lindelöf locally compact X, as well as for countably K-determined spaces X. Our results extend a classical result of J. Christensen.

Strict Sequential P-completeness

In this paper we present a new notion of what it means for a problem in P to be inherently sequential. Informally, a problem L is strictly sequential P-complete if when the best known sequential algorithm for L has polynomial speedup by parallelization, this implies that all problems in P have a polynomial speedup in the parallel setting. The motivation for defining this class of problems is to...

Chow Groups of Quotient Stacks

1.1. Principal G-bundles. Topology is concerned with topological spaces and continuous maps between them. But the data is a topological space of so complicated and infinite in nature that it can be very difficult even to tell when two topological spaces are “the same.” For instance, all n-dimensional manifolds look locally the same. A central theme in algebraic topology is to attach algebraic i...

Sequential Completeness of Inductive Limits

A regular inductive limit of sequentially complete spaces is sequentially complete. For the converse of this theorem we have a weaker result: if indEn is sequentially complete inductive limit, and each constituent space En is closed in indEn, then indEn is α-regular.

Groups without Proper Isomorphic Quotient Groups

If ƒ is a homomorphism of the group G, and if g is an isomorphism of the image group G, then f g is a homomorphism of G too ; and this homomorphism is an isomorphism if, and only if, ƒ is an isomorphism. Consequently the following three properties of the group G imply each other. (1) Homomorphisms of G upon isomorphic groups are isomorphisms. (2) Homomorphisms of G upon itself are isomorphisms....
